Mountaineers to host Chanticleers in football season opener

WVU Football hosts Coastal Carolina at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Milan Puskar Stadium. The matchup is the season opener for both squads in the 2026 college football season.

Before kickoff, WVU will retire former star quarterback Pat White’s iconic number five. Fans are encouraged to wear white in honor of White’s historic career.

The Mountaineers enter year two under head coach Rich Rodriguez's second stint with the program. WVU went  4-8 last season, highlighted by a ranked road win over then No. 21 Houston.

The Mountaineers are led by key transfers fifth-year running back Cam Cook, who led the FBS in rushing yards last season, and fifth-year defensive lineman Zeke Durham Cambell, who looks to tackle his former team.

WVU also holds a pair of talented first-year players in offensive lineman Kevin Brown and safety Matt Sieg.  247Sports named Brown a preseason True Freshman All-American.

Coastal Carolina enters its first season under head coach Ryan Beard following a 6-7 season that saw former head coach Tim Beck fired. Beard joins Coastal from Missouri State, where he went 19-16 in three seasons.

The Chanticleers are led by a defensive tandem: fifth-year defensive back Ja'Marion Wayne and fifth-year linebacker Tray Brown. Wayne was named preseason All-Sun Belt First Team Defense, while Brown was named preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team Defense.
