Morgantown W.Va. - The West Virginia Mountaineers will open up Big XII conference play at home on Saturday, Sep. 21, 2024 against the visiting Kansas Jayhawks.
Saturday's contest will mark the 13 game between KU and WVU, of which West Virginia leads the series 10-2.
The last time the Jayhawks and Mountaineers met was on Sep. 9, 2022 where redshirt Junior quarterback JT Daniels threw an interception to cornerback Sophomore Cobee Bryant in overtime to snap an eight year winning streak for WVU, the final was 55-42.
The Mountaineers look to make a stand in their conference opener as they head into this game with a 1-2 record. After a heartbreaking loss to arch rival Pitt, WVU head coach Neal Brown is still optimistic about the season saying “we’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves, we’re not going to sit around and be miserable… the mentality gotta be that we got one football game and the focus is on Kansas.”
KU are in a similar situation as the Mountaineers. Head coach Lance Leipold and his Jayhawks come into Morgantown with a 1-2 record after a stunning 23-20 loss to the Rebels of UNLV. Leipold was “extremely disappointed” with his group but looks to bounce back much like he did two years ago.
The quarterback battle in Saturday's matchup is something to take note.
In West Virginia's corner is #29 ranked Senior Garrett Greene, who has 607 passing yards for five touchdowns with a 59.3% completion rate and two interceptions, both of which came during the Backyard Brawl.
In Kansas’s corner is #85 ranked Junior Jalon Daniels, who has 442 yards for three touchdowns with a 54.9% completion rate and six interceptions.
For Kansas, they want to extend their win streak against West Virginia to two.
For West Virginia, they want to build off a strong 9-4 2023 season.
For both of these teams the message is the same. Don’t go 1-3.
