Morgantown W. Va– The new look West Virginia Mountaineers are set to open up the 2024-2025 season on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m. EST in an exhibition game against in-state opponent Charleston Golden Eagles.
After finishing the 2023-2024 season with a 9-23 record, WVU turned the tables to a new face. New head coach, Darian DeVries, looks to take over the team and bring the same success he had with the Drake Bulldogs. DeVries in his young coaching career is 150-55 through six seasons. DeVries also led the Bulldogs to a Mississippi Valley Conference Championship and a ten seed in the 2024 March Madness Tournament.
DeVries isn’t the only new addition to West Virginia; his son, Tucker DeVries, two-time MVC Player of the Year, has also joined the Mountaineers. Tucker with the Drake Bulldog averaged 21.8 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists. Tucker has 1 year of eligibility left and is seen as one of the best senior backcourt players in college basketball entering the new year.
In the new era of college basketball, the transfer portal has been hot, and the Mountaineers weren’t afraid to walk into the fire this offseason. With only two players remaining with the team, DeVries went venturing into the portal and found some big-time players for his new school. Headlined by Tucker DeVries as well as Senior Oklahoma State guard Javon Small who averaged 15.1 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.
The West Virginia men’s basketball team looks to get on the right track against Charleston who is now coached by former Mountaineer James Long.
