West Virginia women host No. 17 Texas Tech in Big 12 showdown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia Head Coach Mark Kellogg and his Mountaineers (13-2, 3-0 Big 12) continue Big 12 play at home against the No. 17 Texas Tech Lady Raiders (16-0, 3-0 Big 12).

West Virginia is coming off an undefeated road trip through Kansas, defeating Kansas 79-72 on Jan. 1 before edging Kansas State 60-58 on Jan. 4. The Mountaineers shot a combined 49% from the field during the two-game stretch.

Junior guard Gia Cooke led the way in Lawrence, scoring 24 points while shooting 6 of 9 from 3-point range against the Jayhawks. Cooke added 12 points against the Wildcats, but senior forward Mimi Wheeler stole the spotlight in Manhattan, posting a team-high 18 points and grabbing 10 defensive rebounds.

The Mountaineers will look to defend their undefeated Big 12 record against the only other team without a conference loss this season. No. 17 Texas Tech enters Hope Coliseum seeking another Big 12 victory.

Head coach Krista Gerlich, in her sixth season leading the Lady Raiders, has guided the program to a program-best 16-0 start. Senior guards Snudda Collins and Bailey Maupin pace the team, each averaging 14 points per game.

Despite their perfect record, the Lady Raiders made headlines to begin the new year by signing freshman center Stephanie Okechukwu, the tallest player in college basketball history. The 7-foot-1 native of Nigeria will not play against the Mountaineers due to ongoing NCAA eligibility discussions, but is expected to support her team from the bench. “It’s been a hell of a 48 hours,” Gerlich said after Okechukwu signed last Friday.

U92 The Moose will broadcast the Big 12 showdown, with only one team remaining unbeaten in conference play by the end of the night.

Sports Director Quinn Robie will call the game alongside Matt Foley on color commentary. Live coverage from Hope Coliseum begins at 7 p.m., with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 p.m.

Assistant Sports Director Nico Caretto will host the pregame show, joined by Logan Powell and Blake Fuchs.
