Hard Hats & Home Runs: WVU and Marshall Battle for Diamond Supremacy

The West Virginia Mountaineers (19-3) are set to face long-time rival Marshall (12-12) once again in an in-state showdown at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

The Mountaineers are looking to bounce back after dropping their first series of the season, after losing two out of three games against Arizona. Despite the setback, they look to get back on track in win column against a Thundering Herd squad looking to pick up a big-time win.

In their series against Arizona, the Mountaineers lost a tough fought opener in extra innings but bounced back in game two in dominating fashion even the series at 1-1. However, in the rubber match, starting pitcher Carson Estridge had solid start to the game pitching five innings while allowing three runs to score. The Mountaineers were able to hold a 4-3 lead going into the eighth inning.

The Mountaineers weren't able to hold onto the lead and close the game out as Arizona rallied to score six runs in top of the eighth inning and add two more at the top of the ninth inning to take control and a seal 11-4 loss for the Mountaineers.

Marshall arrives in Morgantown on a two-game losing streak. They are led by Ethan Murdoch who currently leads the team with a .618 slugging, 7 home runs, and 1.020 on-base plus slugging this season.

In the previous game against the James Madison University Dukes, the Herd struggled defensively, committing three errors that ultimately made the difference, losing 2-1.

Since 2008 Marshall's record against the Mountaineers is 9-19, with a 0-11 record at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Herd won the most recent matchup in this rivalry 3-2 in 2024 but before that lost the Mountaineers had won eight straight against the Thundering Herd.
