U92 the Moose, WVU’s college radio station, earned top honors at the Golden Quill Awards on Wednesday, May 28, taking home one win and two finalist recognitions in the Student Excellence in Audio Journalism category.
The “Pit to Podium” podcast, a podcast dedicated to Formula 1 racing, won the Student Excellence in Audio Journalism award in the sports category for their episode, “Discovering the world of motorsports.” The show is hosted by Mark Altman and Sam Nichols.
Judges’ notes said, “This topic is refreshing, the conversation with the guest specific and well guided.”
“Trey, Mark, and I wanted to make the best podcast we could on a topic we all loved,” said co-host Sam Nichols. “To see that be recognized by the Golden Quills is something truly awesome. Having won this award gives me such pride knowing that I left a small legacy at the university that taught me so much.”
Two other U92 podcasts were named finalists in the same category:
- “The PRT Boys,” hosted by Quinn Robie, Andrew Hartlove, Griffin Harper, and Nico Caretto, for their episode “WVU Football Losing Skid / WVU Basketball is Back.”
- “Mountaineer Sports Insider Podcast,” hosted by Cam Scott, Luke Blain, Joey Bray, and Brian McQuillen, for their December 13, 2024 episode.
Incoming U92 Sports Director “PRT Boys” co-host Quinn Robie said he hopes the Golden Quill accolades are the first of many for this year’s sports staff.
“U92 produces a lot of great podcasts, and for one of our own to go out and win an award in a professional setting is an awesome sight to see.”
“Our students are producing some incredible content, and it’s great to see them be recognized for their hard work,” said U92 Broadcast Adviser Eric Nuttall.
Presented annually by The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the Golden Quill Awards recognize excellence in journalism across print, broadcast, photography, videography, and digital media in Western Pennsylvania and surrounding regions of Ohio and West Virginia.
