WVU returns home riding win streak to clash with the Houston Cougars

The Mountaineers take on the Houston Cougars as they look to extend their win streak after a neutral-site win over the Penn State Nittany Lions.  WVU enters the 3-game series with an overall 25-8 record and 10-5 in conference play.

The WVU offense has been the star of the show this season as they post a team batting average of .312 with a .460 slugging percentage. At the plate, there has been one definitive leader for the team in Gavin Kelly, as he hits a .409 average with 56 hits and 34 RBIs on the season. Paul Schoenfeld isn’t far behind for the Mountaineers, as his speed and power have proven to be lethal for the Mountaineers. Shoenfeld comes in with a .377 batting average with 12 and 13 stolen bases. Rounding off the offense for the Mountaineers is Matt Ineich, as he crosses the plate 40 times while also maintaining a .333 batting average.

The Cougars roll into Morgantown with a 16-19 record and a 3-12 mark in Big 12 play. Leading the Cougars offense is Tyler Cox with a .319 batting average and 37 hits this season. Xavier Perez is a strong backup as he brings serious power to the hitting lineup for Houston, bolstering nine home runs and 28 RBIs. Some other considerable names for the Cougars include Riley Jackson and Jackson LaLima, as they combine for 13 home runs and 39 RBIs on the year. Their base running is nothing to look past, either, as Tre Broussard is perfect, going 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.

West Virginia has been equally as effective on the mound, as the team holds a 3.99 ERA and limits its opponents to a .237 batting average. Maxx Yehl sits at 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA and a team-high 60 strikeouts. Chasen Cole is just as reliable as he matches Yehl’s 5-1 record while holding a 3.13 ERA. Montesa isn’t to be slept on either, as his arm has racked up 55 punchouts in 45.1 innings.

The Cougars come in with a 6.11 team ERA, with their most effective arm being Richie Roman, who has a 2.40 ERA over six appearances.
