Morgantown W.Va. – West Virginia (8-2), coming off a 23-point victory against Bethune-Cookman, takes on the Mercyhurst Lakers (6-8) in the mountaineer’s final non-conference game.
In the last game against Bethune-Cookman, WVU was led by a strong performance by Javon Small who tallied 27 points, as well as six rebounds and assists.
Small continues to be the driving force behind West Virginias strong start to the season and they will need him to continue his hot start and more with Tucker DeVries still sidelined indefinably.
Phenom freshmen Jonathan Powell continues to see his role increase on this team as coach DeVries elected to start Powell in the last game as he is averaging 8.7 points per game while shooting above 30% from three.
Meanwhile for the Lakers, this season has had its ups and downs as big losses to teams like Cal and Air Force are matched with a 26-point victory against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Mercyhurst forward Jeff Planutis has had a great start to the season averaging just below 15 points per game but will be matched up against arguably WVUs two best defenders in Sencire Harris and Toby Okani.
West Virginia with a win will arrive at Phog Allen Fieldhouse with a 9-2 record as they take on the Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 opener on New Years Eve.
The matchup against Mercyhurst is set for a 2:00 PM tip on Sunday, December 22nd. U92 will provide coverage with Quinn Robie on play-by-play and Luke Blain on color commentary.
