MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Sun Belt champion West Virginia Mountaineers (12-1-7) take on the Atlantic Sun champion North Florida Ospreys (7-7-4) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The road to the College Cup begins for the Mountaineers.
Following a thriller in the Sun Belt Championship Game against the Marshall Thundering Herd, ending in a penalty shootout to name the Mountaineers champions, WVU looks to continue its championship aspirations Thursday evening.
The Mountaineers are led by Sun Belt Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player in the Sun Belt Tournament, Sergio Ors Navarro. He has 14 goals and four assists on the season, tied for the Sun Belt goal lead with Logan Dorsey of Kentucky.
Alongside him are forward Marcus Caldeira and defender Frederik Jorgensen, both important to the team with elite creation skills. Jorgensen is the Mountaineers’ assist leader with six.
The Mountaineers have an unbeaten 8-0-4 record at home this season. North Florida is 2-5-2 on the road.
North Florida is led by forward Joaquin Acuna, who has 10 goals so far this season. They won the ASUN conference in penalties after a 3-3 draw against Central Arkansas.
Kickoff in a potentially snowy Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, and U92 The Moose will bring full coverage. Tanner Mountz will have play-by-play duties, while Quinn Robie will bring color commentary.
