\The West Virginia University Mountaineers (7-0) will host the Ohio University Bobcats (1-5) in the team’s home opener Wednesday afternoon.
The single-game home stand appears after back-to-back series sweeps against the Jacksonville University Dolphins and the Lipscomb University Bison. WVU carries its momentum back to Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark to take on the Bobcats.
Following last season’s Super Regional Bid, the first in school history, longtime manager Randy Mazey retired after 12 seasons in Morgantown. Mazey ended his WVU career with a record of 372-274, the third most wins in school history.
Longtime assistant Steve Sabins took over the position shortly after the season ended in June 2024. After spending nine seasons as an assistant under Mazey, Sabins has led the Mountaineers to a 7-0 record to start his managerial career.
The WVU offense has been humming since the first pitch of the season. Starting center fielder Skylar King is 10/19 (.526) with five RBIs, a home run, and a 1.429 OPS. With a 100% fielding% and a diving play in center field in the Mountaineers’ previous game, the speedy outfielder has been shining with both the bat and the glove so far.
The offense has scored five or more runs in four of its seven games so far, with timely hitting, pulled power, and the classic “Mazey Ball” drag bunting.
Superutilityman Sam White crushed a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to beat Lipscomb in the series finale. In the same game, King laid down a drag bunt to load the bases in the sixth inning.
WVU’s pitching staff has come out firing. All five qualified pitchers for the Mountaineers, Carson Estridge, Reese Bassinger, Robby Porco, Gavin Van Kempen, and Griffin Kern have a sub-four ERA and a sub-1.4 WHIP. Chase Meyer leads the team in strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) with 15.36.
