MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1) return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday night, facing the Akron Zips. After a narrow 1-0 defeat to No. 15 Virginia last week in the home opener, the Mountaineers are looking to bounce back for their first win of the season.
In last week's match, the West Virginia Mountaineers lost a tough game to the Cavaliers. Despite controlling possession for most of the game and outshooting Virginia 14-8 with five shots on goal compared to Virginia's two, a second-half goal in the 64th minute proved to be too much for the Mountaineers to overcome.
The Mountaineers will look to rely on their senior forward, Ajanae Respass, who was named to the 2025 Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team. Last year, she led the team with seven goals and 19 points.
Meanwhile, the Akron Zips (1-0-1) come into Morgantown with plenty of momentum as they're coming off a 1-0 win against Eastern Illinois. The Zips are led by goalkeeper Sara Bower and freshman defender Luisa Fragnoli, who were named the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Goalkeeper and Defensive Players of the Week.
This will be the first official regular season meeting between WVU and Akron in program history.
U92 The Moose will provide live coverage of the game, with Nico Caretto on play-by-play and RJ Rice handling color commentary from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 19.
Pregame, halftime, and postgame coverage will be brought to you by Cody Burton, Benjamin Stautzenbach, and AJ Fleming. The Pregame show is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The broadcast can be heard locally on 91.7 FM, u92themoose.com, an Alexa At-Home Device, or the RadioFX and TuneIn apps.
