No. 3 WVU Men’s Soccer Look to Play Saint Francis At Home

The No. 3 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers will take on The Red Flash of Saint Francis on Monday, Aug. 26, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, WV.

Last Thursday the Mountaineers took to the pitch for the first time in the 2024 campaign against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons.

Coach Dan Stratfords team put on a clinic for the fans at Dick Dlesk with a dominating score of 4-2. A perfect hat trick from fifth year senior Sergio Ors Navaro and one more goal from Junior Felix Ewald.

Ors Navaro discussed his hot start saying he has, “Never scored a hat trick before and I hope I have many more on the season.”

The Mastodons revealed a few weaknesses in the Mountaineer defense in the second half when they scored two goals. Coach Stratford commented, “Our energy probably dropped off a little bit, we weren't quite as capable of sustaining the attack for longer periods and that put a little life into them.”

Despite the dip in sustaining the Mastodon attack, Stratford had his hopes high for the upcoming contests. Coach Stratford told his team, “We’re 1-0, we just scored four goals at home and surprise, surprise there's things we’ve got to work on.”

The Red Flash entered Morgantown 1-0-0 after defeating the Bonnies of Saint Bonaventure 3-0 on Aug. 22. Sophomores Joschi Schelb and Fabian Wagner both had scoring plays in the match. Schelb had his first multi-goal game of the year.

The last matchup between the Mountaineers and the Red Flash was on Sep. 13, 2018 where West Virginia walked away with a 3-1 victory over Saint Francis.

This is the first time in Saint Francis men’s soccer history that they will face off against a top five ranked opponent.
