WVU Baseball Tussle With James Madison University in Two-Game Set

The West Virginia Mountaineers (16-1) are set to host the James Madison University Dukes (7-12) in a midweek two-game series.

This will be the Mountaineers’ seventh series of the young season. WVU currently has an unbeaten 7-0 record in series.

WVU has a 4-1 record at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark this season, with the lone loss coming off a go-ahead ninth-inning grand slam against the Kennesaw State University Owls. The Mountaineers are still unbeaten (12-0) away.

WVU is coming off an 8-6 victory against the Oklahoma State University Cowboys in Stillwater. The game was decided by the bat of Mannington, W. Va. native Jace Rinehart, who hit a 371 ft. two-run home run in the ninth inning to give his team the victory.

Sophomore pitcher Chase Meyer (4-0) qualified for the win in the game. He threw 3.2 innings of work, striking out nine batters in the process.

Meyer was named the Big 12 pitcher of the week for his efforts against Towson University and Oklahoma State. He struck out 12 of the 17 batters he faced and had a 2-0 record.

The Mountaineers were scheduled to play the Cowboys two other times over the weekend, but Friday and Saturday’s games were canceled due to extreme winds, dust storms, and wildfires across the state. This was part of the large string of extreme weather events that spread throughout the south.

The Dukes are coming into Morgantown winning their last game against the University of Louisiana Monroe, but have lost eight of their previous 10. JMU was ranked sixth in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll.

James Madison is 18-6 all-time against West Virginia. This is the first time the two teams have seen each other since 2014 in Myrtle Beach, S. C., a game the Mountaineers won 5-1.

JMU has no qualified hitters hitting above .250 this season, while WVU has nine.
