No. 10 WVU Men’s Soccer (9-2-2) will host Old Dominion University (5-4-4) in its sixth Sun Belt Conference match of the season at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back from their first Sun Belt loss, 2-1, Saturday, Oct. 18, against the Georgia State University Panthers at GSU Soccer Complex in Atlanta, Georgia. WVU knocked on the door all night long, dominating the time of possession, shooting 19 times with 10 on goal, but only managed to score one goal in the match.
Sophomore forward and Syracuse University transfer Braedon Smith scored the Mountaineers’ only goal in the dying minutes of the first half, his first with the program.
The Monarchs are coming off a 1-1 draw against the University of Central Knights in ODU Soccer Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia. The team won 10-0 over a first-year NCAA Division III opponent, Regent University, the game prior.
In the draw against UCF, ODU forward Lewis Rourke scored the equalizing goal in the 24th minute, his sixth of the season.
WVU is led in goals by Sun Belt goal leader junior forward Pablo Pozos, who transferred to WVU in the winter from Wingate University, with 10 on the season. The team is led in assists by senior forward Marcus Caldeira, who has seven assists, along with seven goals of his own.
Caldeira was named the preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year and is the current goal leader of all Division I active players, with 33 in his illustrious career.
Rourke leads the way for the Monarchs with his six. They are led in assists by forward Michael Eberle, who has five on the season.
The full game against the Monarchs will be broadcast on U92 The Moose! Catch Gabe Schon on play-by-play and Brett Berner on color commentary with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in Dick Dlesk.
The pregame show hosted by Andy Hartlove with Aaron Pepling, DJ McDermott, and Richard Turkovic will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will lead up to kickoff.
