The West Virginia Mountaineers (14-1) will welcome the Towson University Tigers (4-11) to Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark for a single-game Tuesday matchup.
The Mountaineers are coming off their fifth-straight series win against the Kennesaw State University Owls. In that series, the Mountaineers won the first and final games in the three-game series but lost the middle matchup.
In the first game of the series, Quincy University transfer Griffin Kirn started for the Mountaineers, allowing four hits and two runs in 5.1 innings of work as the winning pitcher. Superutilityman Sam White hit 4/4 with three runs and three runs batted in as the Mountaineers defeated the Owls 16-2.
In the middle game, White was 3/4 at the plate with three runs batted in and catcher Logan Sauve hit a home run. The Mountaineers held a 9-7 lead going into the top of the ninth inning but the game was quickly tied by a two-run shot off WVU’s Jack Kartsonas by Cam Suto. Later in the inning, Donovan Cash hit a go-ahead grand slam that hit off the left-center field scoreboard to ensure the Owls beat the Mountaineers 13-9. This was WVU’s first loss of the season.
In the rubber match, the Mountaineers gave up three runs in the first inning but answered right back with a three-run shot by White and a triple by Gavin Kelly. Shortstop Brody Kresser had a stellar day at the plate, with three hits, including a home run, a day removed from taking a ball to the head/helmet area. Kelly had a straight steal of home to put the nail in the coffin as WVU beat Kennesaw State 14-7.
Towson comes into Morgantown on a three-game losing streak. In its previous game against George Mason University, the Tigers attempted to make a comeback, but fell just short, losing 7-5.
Towson is 1-2 against WVU with its only win coming on April 6, 2010, in Kendrick Family Ballpark. They last played in 2019, a game where the Mountaineers won 8-3.
