The West Virginia University Mountaineers (18-1) host the Arizona University Wildcats (16-4) in the Mountaineers’ first Big 12 home series.
The Mountaineers are 1-0 in conference play, with a win against preseason favorite Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. The Mountaineers and Cowboys had two other games scheduled for last weekend, but both were postponed due to extreme weather conditions in the state.
The Wildcats are 3-0 in conference play, but 5-0 against Big 12 opponents. They beat Arizona State University and Kansas University in games scheduled before Arizona switched to the conference. The Wildcats swept the University of Cincinnati in their first official Big 12 series last weekend.
The Mountaineers are coming off a two-game sweep against the James Madison University Dukes. WVU won the first game 11-1 in eight innings, behind an eight-run first inning capped by the three-run, 40th career home run off the bat of Grant Hussey.
The second game of the series was a 3-1 victory for the Mountaineers behind five great innings from freshman pitcher David Hagen. Sam White stole home in a triple steal attempt for WVU to give his team the lead in the fourth inning. WVU would tack on one more run and not look back as Kent State transfer Jack Kartsonas shut the door.
The Wildcats have a high-powered offense led by Brendan Summerhill. Summerhill is MLB Pipeline’s 10th overall draft prospect for 2025 and has a .427 batting average and 1.200 on-base plus slugging this season.
