No. 13 West Virginia University Men’s Soccer (5-1-1) hosts No. 11 High Point University (5-0-2) in Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m.
This is the Mountaineers’ first time being the lower-ranked team at home since the Sun Belt Championship Game of last season against No. 8 Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. WVU won that game in penalties following a 0-0 draw at full time.
West Virginia is coming off a 2-1 win over James Madison University in Dick Dlesk on Friday, Sept. 19, to open up Sun Belt Conference play. Junior forward Pablo Pozos and senior forward Marcus Caldeira scored goals for the Mountaineers in the win.
Pozos scored his Sun Belt-leading seventh goal of the young season against the Dukes. The Wingate transfer continues to shine for the Mountaineers.
Caldeira assisted on the Pozos goal, his career-best sixth assist on the season. Pozos and Caldeira have had great chemistry in the box this season.
“It’s unbelievable to play with a player like him [Caldeira],” Pozos said in a postgame interview after the win against James Madison.
High Point is coming off a 3-1 win over Presbyterian College on Sept. 19, in Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C., to open up Big South Conference play with a win. Forward Daniel Lugo scored his fifth goal of the season in the game.
High Point lost to Gardner-Webb University in the Big South Championship game 2-1 last season. The Panthers are looking to flip the script this season.
WVU is 0-1 against the Big South this season, with its only loss of the season coming in a 1-0 finish against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs Sept. 3 in Dick Dlesk. This loss was the Mountaineers’ first at home since a 2-1 loss to Yale University on Sept. 9, 2022.
The full game against the Panthers will be broadcast on U92 The Moose! Catch U92 Sports Director Quinn Robie on play-by-play and Connor Roberts on color commentary.
The pregame show hosted by Brett Berner with Dom Brusco, John Doucette, and Johnathan Edwards will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will lead up to kickoff.
