The No. 18 West Virginia Mountaineers (19-5) look to bounce back on its Senior Day against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats (14-9).
In its last game at Baylor University, WVU could never put the breaks on the Bears’ high-powered offensive attack, losing 75-65. Junior Jordan Harrison had a solid game for the Mountaineers, scoring 20 points on 7/13 shooting and four steals.
Despite there being five games left in the season, three at home, the seniors wanted this game, the last home weekend game of the season, to be their day.
“Families can get here much easier on a Saturday than on a Monday, Presidents’ Day at two o’clock or whatever comes after that. There’s nothing to it other than the seniors wanted it on a Saturday,” said Head Coach Mark Kellogg.
The seniors getting recognized include JJ Quinerly, Zya Nugent, Sydney Woodley, Danelle Arigbabu, Kylee Blacksten, Kiyah Watson and Tirzah Moore. Quinerly is the only one of the six to play all four years as a Mountaineer.
WVU looks to continue its stellar home form on the season, at an undefeated 13-0 in the WVU Coliseum this season, the home atmosphere has played into success. The Jan. 4 66-53 win versus BYU was the closest point differential (+13) for the Mountaineers this season.
“We have a great home identity. We feel really comfortable here,” said Kellogg after the Mountaineer's last home game against the University of Kansas.
The Mountaineers are led by Quinerly. Known for her defensive prowess, the former Big 12 DPOY is averaging 19.0 points per game along with 3.3 steals.
The Bearcats have had an up-and-down season. At 6-7 in Big 12 play, any preseason hopes of a NCAA Tournament berth are dwindling.
Cincinnati is led by senior forward Jillian Hayes, a dominant paint presence. Hayes has started in all games this season, averaging 16.2 points per game and grabbing 9.7 rebounds in the process.
