The No. 16 West Virginia University Mountaineers (40-10) are set to host the University of Kansas Jayhawks (39-14) in the final regular season series this year.
With one win, WVU can take home its first solo Big 12 regular season title. In 2023, WVU was in a similar position, but got swept by the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns in the season finale, forcing them to share the regular season title with both Oklahoma State University and Texas.
The Mountaineers enter the game losing three of their last four games against the University of Pittsburgh and Kansas State University. Kansas is on a two-game winning streak with wins against Brigham Young University.
Before the recent skid, West Virginia was ranked No. 12 according to D1Baseball and had won six straight Big 12 series. After losing their second Big 12 series of the season, the Mountaineers fell four spots in the D1Baseball rankings.
WVU is on top of the Big 12 standings with a 19-6 conference record, and Kansas sits in third place with a 17-10 record. Arizona State University, which the Mountaineers have not seen this season, sits in second place.
If the Mountaineers fail to win a game this series, they can still clinch the regular season title with one ASU loss against Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
WVU is also one win away from clinching its single-season wins record, set in 2023. It has been a historic first season for Head Coach Steve Sabins.
WVU began the season 13-0 with wins over Jacksonville University, Lipscomb University, Ohio University, Queens University of Charlotte and Kennesaw State University. The fourth-best start in program history.
Sabins shattered the program record for wins by a first-year head coach to start the season. It was originally seven before Sabins crossed that mark back in February.
The Mountaineers have been built on timely hitting, clutch pitching and clever baserunning as they approach new heights for the program. They look to disintegrate last week’s slump and clinch history against Kansas.
