Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Live by Nirvana
It's not a new song, obviously, but the song itself is full of so much angst. It is a cover of an old “Lead Belly” song, but spoofed up into the Nirvana grunge style. The lyrics fit the vibe of Nirvana so well as the grunge undertones on the guitar suit the style of lyrics perfectly. “My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me” is one of the hardest-hitting lyrics in the song, especially being paired with “I would shiver the whole night through,” insinuating he would rather be with his “girl” than anywhere else. The second half of the song really captivates me as Cobain screams the chorus of the song in a soul-crushing way that makes you feel as though you are experiencing the pain of the lyrics through the group themselves.
I Am the Highway by Audioslave
I have recently gotten into Chris Cornell’s work, and boy oh boy, is this song beautiful. A song about a breakup and how you are better off without your partner. “I am not your rolling wheels… I am the highway”. The perfect song for crying about your breakup and how it needed to happen. Or even for being happy that you are out of a broken relationship. “Friends and liars don’t wait for me ‘Cause I’ll get on all by myself” hits close to home. Finding yourself and knowing you are going to be okay alone for a while, and just taking it all as a ride. Beautiful work by Cornell and crew to curate such a beautiful alternative rock self-love song.
Falling Asleep by Dominic Fike
Dominic Fike is one of my favorite artists recently, and this song is just one example of how diverse his music can be. This song has some grunge undertones, but also some nerd rock, indie, and hip hop. That’s exactly what Fike is. This song specifically is just fun. It has some similarities to Weezer, and his song Think Fast off of Sunburn, but this song is just fun. The lyrics themselves are about how Fike is having a hard time trusting other people, how he actively distances himself from them, and how there are negatives to fame and money. A constant undertone in his music.
