Morgantown, W. Va. - The West Virginia Mountaineers (7-2) host the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (2-7) Saturday evening. Under first-year head coach Darian DeVries, the Mountaineers are off to a hot start on the season, with wins over then-third-ranked Gonzaga, and then-24th-ranked Arizona in the Bahamas. They also took down Big East foe Georgetown at the Coliseum in the Big East-Big 12 Battle.
Coach DeVries has his squad two wins shy of matching the win total of last season under interim coach Josh Eilert. A sign of future success for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers will be without star forward Tucker DeVries in this game due to an upper-body injury. Senior guard Jayden Stone is still yet to make his Mountaineer debut with an upper-body injury.
WVU is led by Senior guard, Javon Small who has averaged 19.0 points, 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals in nine games this season. The Oklahoma State transfer continues to show his two-way prowess.
West Virginia is coming off a 79-45 victory over North Carolina Central. Freshman guard, Jonathan Powell led the team with 17 points, fellow freshman KJ Tenner had six assists in the contest.
Bethune Cookman is coached by former collegiate and NBA star Reggie Theus, who played 13 years in the association after a great career at UNLV. They are coming off a loss against Virginia where they competed but eventually lost 59-41.
