The West Virginia Mountaineers (10-3-2) aim to keep their hopes of defending their Sun Belt title alive as they face off against in-state rivals Marshall (8-1-5) on Halloween.
The Mountaineers’ men's soccer team is coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats, which dropped them from first place in the conference to third, with only two games remaining in the season.
In last week's loss to Kentucky, the Mountaineers outshot the Wildcats 9-7 and held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Also, West Virginia earned five corner kicks compared to just Kentucky's one.
That loss, marked the Mountaineers' second loss in three games, a cold stretch the team hopes to get out of before postseason play starts.
West Virginia is lead by junior forward Pablo Pozos and senior forward Marcus Caldeira, who have combined for 17 of the team's 30 goals on the season, with Pozos leading the way with 10.
On the other side, the Thundering Herd is lead by junior defender Rai Pinto, who leads the Herd with four goals. Last week, he was named the Sun Belt Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Marshall comes into Morgantown red-hot, going 5-0-1 in their last six games, with their only draw happening last week in a 0-0 match against Old Dominion.
The Mountaineers are looking to win two straight against the Marshall Thundering Herd, as the teams last met in 2024, when West Virginia beat them in a 6-5 penalty shootout, securing their first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship.
