With the first game in the books, the West Virginia Mountaineers look to pick up another win in a non-conference matchup against Campbell. West Virginia is coming off a 70-54 victory over Mount St. Mary’s. The key to the Mountaineers’ success was Jasper Floyd, who scored a career-high 25 points, going 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-9 on free throws to help West Virginia secure the win.
The season opener showed promise for the Mountaineers’ offense. West Virginia likes to attack the paint and score efficiently. Of the 70 points against Mount St. Mary’s, 55 came from field goals or free throws, demonstrating the team’s ability to capitalize on fouls and opportunities in the paint.
The Fighting Camels enter Hope Coliseum with a 0-1 record, coming off a 64-96 loss to No. 24-ranked Wisconsin. Guard DJ Smith led Campbell with 23 points, going 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-3 on free throws in the defeat.
This game will mark the first meeting between the two teams. It is also the second game of the Mountaineers’ home game homestand, with Lehigh up next. Multiple contributors are expected for West Virginia’s offense. Transfer Honor Huff showed promise against Mount St. Mary’s, scoring 16 points on 7-of-7 free throws and 3-of-11 from three-point range. Huff was the nation’s top three-point shooter last season, and more contributions are expected.
