MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia hosts Texas Southern on Monday night, looking to build on its dominant win over Mercyhurst. The Mountaineers are 7-2 and averaging nearly 80 points per game. Meanwhile, Texas Southern enters Hope Coliseum at 3-4 and winless on the road.
WVU’s high-scoring offense has been powered by 47% shooting and nearly 20 trips to the free-throw line per game. Against Mercyhurst, the Mountaineers mixed high-percentage looks with consistent foul drawing on their way to a 97-point performance.
Junior guard Gia Cooke leads WVU with 16.1 points per game. Guards Sydney Shaw and Jordan Harrison, along with forward Kirra Wheeler, also average double figures through nine games.
West Virginia pairs its offense with a defense built on pressure and a relentless full-court press. WVU forces 22.7 turnovers per game and turns those takeaways into an average of 25 points. Texas Southern arrives averaging 21 turnovers per game and holding a -1.4 turnover margin, giving WVU a clear avenue to exploit.
The Tigers have struggled offensively, shooting below 39% from the field and just 24% from beyond the arc. They allow 75 points per game and have not created turnovers at a high rate.
TSU has two double-figure scorers: Daeja Holmes (10.9) and Taliyah Logwood (10.7). Holmes also leads the team in 3-point shooting at 35%. Both guards average more than seven rebounds per game, tied for the team lead, and help drive the Tigers’ strong rebounding presence.
Texas Southern averages 43.9 rebounds per game, compared with WVU’s 38.1. The battle on the glass will be a key matchup to watch.
This marks West Virginia’s final regular-season game against a non–Power Four opponent. The Mountaineers will look to secure their eighth win before wrapping up nonconference play this week. WVU hosts Georgia Tech on Thursday and travels to College Station to face Texas A&M on Sunday.
