West Virginia Looks to Make a Statement against Marshall in Sun Belt Championship Game

Morgantown, W. Va. - The first-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (12-1-6) are looking to use Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium to its advantage as it host in-state rival Marshall Thundering Herd (11-1-6).

West Virginia advanced to the championship game by defeating the Georgia Southern Eagles 3-2 in the quarterfinals and Kentucky 2-1 in the semifinals. The Mountaineers are led by Sun Belt Coach of the Year Dan Stratford and Sun Belt Player of the Year Sergio Ors Navarro. West Virginia is known for having an outstanding defensive line, as it has only allowed 1.05 goals per game.

Marshall is coming into this championship game hungry for a Sun Belt championship as it beat the Old Dominion Monarchs 3-2 and the James Madison Dukes 1-0. Senior Forward Linker Rodrigues dos Santos, who leads Marshall in goals with ten as the team averages 1.94 goals per game, wants to lead this Thundering Herd team to back-to-back Sun Belt Championships as it beat the Mountaineers last year in Huntington, West Virginia.

Kick-off for this matchup is set for Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1:00 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
