MORGANTOWN W.Va.- The West Virginia Mountaineers are set to do battle against the Colonials of Robert Morris at the West Virginia Colosseum on Monday Nov. 4, 2024.
The West Virginia men’s basketball team starts a new era in 2024-25 season at home with a new coach at the helm. Darian DeVries was the head coach of the Drake University Bulldogs and brought his talents to WVU after a brief two year coaching skid. DeVries looks to improve the condition of the program after a 9-23 campaign in 2023 headed by Interim Head Coach Josh Eilert.
Coach DeVries brings a new look to the Mountaineers, he brings his son, 6’7” guard/forward senior Tucker DeVries, from Drake to help reshape the landscape of the new Mountaineer team.
Coach DeVries recruited heavily in the transfer portal bringing in 6’3” guard senior Javon Small from Oklahoma State, 6’8” froward sophomore Amani Hansberry and 6’4” Sophomore Sencire Harris from Illinois, and 6’0” guard fifth year senior Joseph Yesufu from Washington State among others.
The preseason showed promise for the young team after the Mountaineers took on the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston in an exhibition contest. West Virginia took the win 94-61 on Oct. 18.
Robert Morris hails from the Horizon Conference where they are led by Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole, who lead the Colonials to a 10-22 overall record in 2023-2024. Toole is entering his 14 season with RMU and looks to improve his record with a win on the road to start off the regular season.
The Colonials already played an exhibition match against Villanova on Oct. 27 where they fell just short of a win, losing 87-73. 6’5” junior Gannon Transfer Josh Omojafo and 6’0” Bowling Green transfer junior DJ Smith lead the way in scoring in that one, they both netted 15 points.
