MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Men’s Basketball will look to stay unbeaten as it hosts Lafayette College on Monday at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers enter the matchup at 4-0, coming off their most recent performance of the season in a 71-49 win over the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday.
WVU has leaned on its steady defense through its first four games, holding opponents to 53.8 points per game while limiting them to 36.7 % shooting from the field. The Mountaineers are also winning the turnover battle by more than five per game. This margin has helped them control the pace of the game even when their shots aren’t falling.
Senior guard Honor Huff leads West Virginia with 15.5 points per game. While his overall shooting numbers are still coming along, he has been reliable at the foul line, hitting more than 81% of his attempts for the Mountaineers.
Another bright spot for this team is forward Brenen Lorient, averaging 13.8 points and a team-best 8 rebounds per game while shooting better than 53% from the floor. When it comes to size and efficiency, Harlan Obioha is the guy for West Virginia, shooting 80% and adding 12 points per game.
Lafayette comes rolling into Morgantown at 1-3 after a 97-78 loss to Cornell. The Leopards are averaging 73.3 points but have struggled defensively, allowing nearly 81 points per game and getting out-rebounded by almost 7 rebounds a night. Lafayette opponents are hitting 44.9% of their shots and nearly 10 threes per game.
Guard Caleb Williams leads Lafayette with 17.5 points per game and shoots 40% from three. Guard Andrew Phillips pairs with him to give the Leopards a capable scoring duo, adding 14.8 points per game on 48.9% shooting. Forward Shareef Jackson has been the team’s most efficient option inside, averaging 10.3 points while shooting better than 61%.
For West Virginia, keeping Lafayette off the offensive glass and limiting second-chance looks will be key. The Leopards have shown they can score if they find rhythm, but they’ve also struggled to defend the paint, which could create opportunities for Lorient and Obioha.
