Kent State Golden Flashes role into Hope Coliseum

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Looking to keep the momentum going, the West Virginia women’s basketball team will host its second game of the season against Kent State.

The Mountaineers opened the year with an 83-47 win over Purdue Fort Wayne. Senior guard Jordan Harrison led the way with 15 points, going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and 2-for-3 from 3-point range.

West Virginia had four players score in double figures in the season opener, showcasing the team’s offensive depth and balance.

Kent State enters Morgantown coming off an 80-48 loss to James Madison. Junior center Riley Rismiller was a bright spot for the Golden Flashes, finishing 4-for-7 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 at the line.

This matchup marks the 11th meeting between the programs and the first since 1988. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 7-3.

Kent State is led by head coach Todd Starkey, who owns a 164-112 career record. Last season, Starkey guided the Golden Flashes to a 22-12 finish. This year marks his 10th season at the helm.

Defense has been the identity of this West Virginia team. In the win over Purdue Fort Wayne, the Mountaineers forced 31 turnovers. Junior forward Carter McCray pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. Those numbers reflect Mark Kellogg’s defensive mindset, which features a relentless full-court press that pressures opposing guards from start to finish.
